The food blog is live! I've always been passionate about food and cooking, but I'll admit, I'm no great cook. Still, I'm working on it and figured starting a blog would help me document the process and share what I learn with fellow food enthusiasts.
This idea has been on the back burner for far too long, but I finally got the blog up and running. But then came the daunting task of writing my first post. I stared at the blank screen, the cursor taunting me with each blink. All the ideas I had before making the blog had vanished, and I was stuck in a rut. I am not a chef and I am not a writer just someone passionate about food.
While brainstorming I came across a quote from Ernest Hemingway that struck a chord with me: "In order to write about life, first you must live it." It was a call to action, and I knew I had to go out and experience life before I could write about it. So, I packed my bags and hit the road to Key West, the location of Hemingway's house and the southernmost point in the continental US.
The change of scenery and break from the daily grind was refreshing, and as I wandered through Hemingway's home, surrounded by his library and writing studio, inspiration hit me. Key lime pie. That was going to be the focus of my first post. To explore the Keys and find the best pies, to taste the true essence of this sweet and tangy delicacy.
After wandering around and talking to some locals three names kept popping up but before we dive into the three Key West locations that I recommend for this quintessential Floridian dessert, let's take a look at the history of Key lime pie. The dish originated in the Florida Keys in the late 1800s, made with Key lime juice, condensed milk, and egg yolks, poured into a graham cracker crust. The unique tartness of the Key lime juice, which is more acidic and aromatic than regular lime juice, gives the pie its distinctive flavor. Interestingly, the original recipe didn't require baking. Instead, the acidic lime juice "cooked" the sweetened condensed milk, resulting in a thick and creamy filling. However, today's recipe involves baking, which gives the pie a more custard-like texture.
Now, onto the good stuff. Here are the three locations in Key West where you can find the best Key lime pie:
The first place I visited was the legendary Blue Heaven. With its outdoor seating area and exceptional brunch, it's a local institution and a must-visit spot for Key lime pie. Their pie boasts the perfect balance of tartness and sweetness, with a meringue topping that's as light and sweet as a cloud floating atop the pie. It's a match made in heaven that'll make you swoon with every bite.

The next place I visited was Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe, a shop that specializes in all things Key lime, from candy, pies, cookies, and even Key lime juice. Walking in and seeing the large selection of key lime goodies and memorabilia it was apparent they knew a thing or two about key lime pie. I got to try something a little different in this location. A slice of key lime pie on a stick covered in chocolate. The dark chocolate tones down the brightness of the pie giving it a different flavor profile. This is a must-try for all chocolate lovers.

The final destination was a stop on the drive back home. Located on Key Largo the Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory has been making Key lime pies for over three decades and is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Their pies feature a luscious creamy filling and a crispy, crumbly crust. They serve the pie in four different ways: whipped cream, meringue, chocolate, or without a topping. They have a beautiful garden sitting area where you can savor your slice and relax while enjoying the beautiful Florida weather. It was the perfect way to refuel before the drive home.

All three locations are the epitome of perfection when it comes to Key lime pie. Each has the right balance of tartness and sweetness, the burst of flavor from the Key limes, and the perfect crunch from the crust. I highly recommend trying them all! As I drove home I reflected on the experience and Hemingway’s quote: "In order to write about life, first you must live it." Realizing that while this adventure is coming to an end there are many more to come. I hope that this motivates you to go out and try something different! Stay tuned for more food odyssey!
